It is important to guide children to choose
positive role models and that is what made the author Skype with Chris
Grabenstein such a wonderful event for our fourth graders. Chris is a funny,
engaging personality who writes books our kids LOVE! What a great person for
our students to look up to and celebrate.
Fourth grade
was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to Skype with author Chris
Grabenstein on Monday, February 8. He has written several children’s books
including Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s
Library and The Island of Dr. Libris.
We were
extremely lucky to be able to snag a known author to Skype with, and prepared
our kids by reading aloud both of the above books prior to the Skype session.
When the
time came to Skype, our students were brimming with questions for the author.
They asked him how he got the ideas for his books, they wanted to know what the
inspiration was for several characters, how he named characters, when he knew
he was going to be a writer, what his writing process was, and on. Chris told
them about how stories needed rising conflict and resolution (it was almost
like we had prepped him ahead of time on our writing curriculum!)
The students
loved talking to Chris, and several followed up a few weeks later and went to
meet the author when he made a visit to Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville.
