Today Second grade students experienced the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. In this book, a little mouse is given a very large name that her parents think is just right for her. When she goes to school her friends tease her. Like a flower Chrysanthemum would wilt each time she was teased. During our lesson, a silhouette of a student was crinkled each time Chrysanthemum was made fun of. At the end of the story students tried to smooth out the silhouette. Even though the wrinkles remained, students realized that hurt feelings are remembered but should be forgiven. Chrysanthemum taught us a valuable lesson of how to appreciate each other’s unique qualities.
